Before You Start

To see a chart, you need:

  • At least one device checked in the device tree (see Selecting Devices with the Tree).
  • A metric selected, such as Power or Energy (see Choosing What to Measure).

Once both are in place, TimeView draws the chart automatically.

The Chart Area at a Glance

Each device you select in the tree appears as its own colored line (or bar) in the chart. The X-axis shows time; the Y-axis shows the metric value. The color assigned to a device is consistent across the chart, the legend, and the tree - so you can always trace a line back to its source.

The chart type is set automatically by the metric: Power, Current, Voltage, Frequency, and Flow display as a line chart; Energy, Cost, Carbon, and Volume display as a bar chart.

Working with the Legend

The legend lists every device currently plotted on the chart. Each entry shows a colored line swatch and the device name.

Hiding a series temporarily

Click a device name in the legend to hide that line from the chart. A Click to disable tooltip appears when you hover over the name before clicking. The device stays checked in the tree - it is only hidden visually. Click the name again to bring it back.

Use this when you want to focus on one or two devices without removing others from your selection.

Removing a device from the chart

Hover over a device name to reveal two icons on the right. Click the × icon to remove that device entirely. This is equivalent to unchecking it in the tree - the device disappears from both the chart and the tree selection.

Adding series add-ons

The second icon that appears on hover (the stacked layers icon) opens the Chart series add-ons panel for that device. From there you can layer in statistics, quality signals, thresholds, and overrides directly on that series. See Chart Series Add-Ons for full details.

Reading Tooltips

As you move your cursor across the chart, a tooltip appears showing the data at that moment in time.

The tooltip includes:

  • The timestamp for the point under your cursor.
  • For each visible device: its color swatch, device name, and metric value with unit (for example, "HVAC Unit 3 - 4.2 kW").

The tooltip follows your cursor left and right across the chart. All visible devices are shown in the tooltip at the same time, so you can compare values at a glance without hovering over individual lines.

The Y-Axis

The Y-axis label changes to match the metric you have selected:

Metric Y-Axis Label
Power Power (kW)
Energy Energy (kWh)
Cost Cost (currency)
Carbon Carbon (kg CO₂)
Flow Flow (unit)
Frequency Frequency (Hz)

The scale adjusts automatically to fit the data in view - it always starts at 0 and extends just above the highest reading currently plotted. If you add or remove devices, the Y-axis rescales to match.

Fullscreen Mode

To give the chart more room, click the fullscreen icon in the top-right corner of the chart area. The device tree and surrounding controls collapse, and the chart fills your browser window.

To exit fullscreen, press Esc or click the fullscreen icon again.

Troubleshooting

The chart is empty- Make sure at least one device is checked in the tree and a metric is selected. If devices are checked but nothing appears, the device may have no data for the selected time range.

A line I expected to see is missing from the chart- Check the legend - the device may have been hidden by clicking its name. Click the device name again to show it.

All lines look flat at the bottom of the chart- One device may have values much higher than the others, compressing the scale. Click that device's name in the legend to hide it and see the remaining devices at a better scale.
