What Are Layers?

Layers are chart-wide overlays that add context on top of your energy data. They are not tied to a specific device - they apply across the entire chart.

TimeView has two layers:

  • Schedule - shades the chart to show your site's on-hours (working time) and off-hours (non-working time) based on a schedule calendar.
  • Outside temperature - adds a temperature line (in °C or °F) so you can correlate weather conditions with changes in energy consumption.

Both layers require the Optimize package.

How to Open the Layers Controls

Click the gear icon (⚙) in the top-right toolbar of the TimeView chart area. This opens the Customize chart panel on the right. The panel has two tabs: Chart and Preferences.

Under the Chart tab, scroll to the Data Layers section. You will see a checkbox for Schedule and a checkbox for Outside temperature. Check either box to add that layer to the chart. Uncheck it to remove it.

Schedule Layer: Working Hours

What is it?

The schedule layer shades your chart with colored bands that represent the on-hours and off-hours defined in your site's working-hours calendar. On-hours (working time) and off-hours (non-working time) are visually distinct, so you can immediately see whether energy usage is in line with operational patterns or whether something is running outside business hours.

Enabling the Schedule Layer

  1. Open the Customize chart panel via the gear icon (⚙).
  2. Under the Chart tab, find the Data Layers section.
  3. Check Schedule. A dropdown appears immediately below the checkbox showing the schedule currently assigned to this site.

The shading appears on the chart right away. Unchecking Schedule removes the shading without affecting your device selections or time range.

Selecting a Different Schedule (Optimize)

By default, the dropdown shows the schedule set as the site default in Site Settings. If your account has multiple schedules defined, you can choose a different one from the dropdown- search or scroll to find it, or click × to clear the current selection. The chart updates immediately to reflect the selected schedule's on/off hours.

Note: The ability to browse and select from all account-level schedules requires the Optimize package.

If No Schedule Is Configured

If the site does not have a default schedule assigned, the Schedule checkbox is disabled. A tooltip explains why. To set a schedule, a site admin can go to Site Settings to assign a site-default schedule, or an account admin can create schedules at the account level.

Outside Temperature Layer

What is it?

The outside temperature layer adds the local air temperature as an additional line series on the chart - overlaid on the same time axis as your energy data. It uses weather data from the site's location. Temperature is displayed in °C or °F, depending on your display preferences.

This layer helps you answer questions like: "Did energy spike this morning because it got cold overnight?" or "Is HVAC consumption always higher on warmer afternoons?"

Enabling the Outside Temperature Layer

  1. Open the Customize chart panel via the gear icon (⚙).
  2. Under the Chart tab, find the Data Layers section.
  3. Check Outside temperature. The temperature line appears on the chart immediately with its own secondary Y-axis.

To also display the daily temperature range, enable Show maximum and minimum value when showing temperature data - the toggle beneath the Outside temperature checkbox. This adds a shaded band around the temperature line showing the high and low for each day.

Uncheck Outside temperature to remove the line.

Temperature Units

The temperature line displays in either °C or °F. To change the unit, click your avatar in the top-right corner, select Personal Preferences, and update the Temperature Units dropdown. Click Save Preferences to apply. The chart reflects the change immediately.

Reading the Legend

When either layer is active, two things happen:

  • The toolbar shows an Added layers indicator below the action icons, listing the active layer names at a glance.
  • The legend panel shows the schedule and temperature entries at the top, above your device sections.

The Schedule entry displays the active schedule name with a calendar icon. The Outside temperature entry displays a dotted line indicator and the temperature unit (°F or °C). Click the eye icon next to either entry to temporarily hide it on the chart without disabling it in the Data Layers panel.

If you are using Compare mode, the legend shows both primary and compare variants of the temperature overlay- so you can see whether temperatures differed between the two periods.
